Distribution coverage vs distribution yield

Updated 2026-08-27

Yield tells you the size of the cheque; distribution coverage asks whether issuer financial statements supported what was paid. Learn the difference.

Two questions investors often confuse

When you research income ETFs, you usually see a distribution yield first — often in marketing materials or on a screener. CoverCall Ledger focuses on a second question: did the fund earn what it paid?

Measure What it tells you Typical source
Distribution yield Size of recent payments relative to price Market price + distribution history
Dist. coverage Whether period profit supported distributions MRFP / annual financial statements

High yield with weak coverage is a different risk picture than high yield with full coverage.

Yield is a rate, not a quality score

Yield moves with price and the most recent distribution. A fund can cut its distribution tomorrow, or raise it after a volatile options month. Yield does not tell you whether last year's accounting earnings supported the cheques that were sent.

For covered-call funds specifically, option premiums can make distributions look large even when underlying portfolio gains are modest — which is why reading filings matters.

Coverage uses accrual earnings

CoverCall Ledger's Dist. coverage compares earned (period profit from financial statements, including unrealized gains where reported) to distributed (cash paid to unitholders) for a stated filing year.

At 100% or above, we show Covered. Below that, you see the percentage. This matches how issuers report period profit in annual documents — not a forecast of future payments.

Where 2025 filing data is mapped, each page shows earned vs paid. Where not yet mapped, the page shows tape data and an honest gap label.

Read both — but know the order

1. Use yield to understand the current income rate (always confirm on the issuer site).

2. Use coverage to understand whether filings supported those payments for a completed year.

3. Confirm figures against the issuer's MRFP before making decisions.
