You do not need to be an accountant to spot whether a fund’s annual documents support its distributions. This guide shows which sections of a Canadian MRFP / annual financial statements (and US N-CSR / shareholder report) matter for Dist. coverage — the same lens CoverCall Ledger maps.
Educational only. Not tax, legal, or investment advice. Always use the issuer’s PDF as the source of truth.
Documents that matter
| Market | Typical documents | What we use |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Annual MRFP + audited annual financial statements | Statement of comprehensive income / changes; distributions; NAV per unit tables |
| United States | N-CSR / annual financial statements | Operations, changes in net assets, financial highlights |
CoverCall Ledger’s Dist. coverage is accrual: period profit (including unrealized gains) ÷ distributions paid for a stated year.
A simple reading checklist
1. Identify the period — calendar year vs fiscal year ended Jun 30 / Oct 31 / stub launch year. JEPI and QYLD are not the same window.
2. Find “increase (decrease) in net assets from operations” (or equivalent) — this is the closest “earned” total for coverage.
3. Find total distributions to unitholders / shareholders — the “paid” side.
4. Note realized vs unrealized — covered-call funds often show large unrealized lines; accrual coverage includes them when they sit in period profit.
5. Check financial highlights for NAV start/end and issuer total return — that is filing-period return, separate from CoverCall 2026 YTD tape.
What filings cannot tell you alone
- Whether next month’s distribution will be cut or raised
- Tax character for your account (ROC vs dividend vs capital gain) — that needs tax slips / 19(a) notices, not just accrual coverage
- Live NAV — CoverCall Ledger uses exchange last prints for tape fields
How CoverCall Ledger uses the same pages
When we map a fund, we publish earned, paid, Dist. coverage, and a filing URL on the fund page. Examples:
- ZWB — Covered for 2025 from BMO statements
- JEPI — 96% covered for FY Jun 2025 from the J.P. Morgan N-CSR
- QYLD — 73% covered for FY Oct 2025
If a ticker is tape-only, the annual package may not be out yet or not yet mapped — see How to read Dist. coverage.
ROC note (careful)
Management reports sometimes discuss return of capital for tax characterization of distributions. That is related to, but not identical to, Dist. coverage. See Return of capital vs “earned the cheque”.
Practice
Open any mapped fund’s Source filing button, find operations and distributions, and compare with the earned/paid line on CoverCall Ledger. Spot a mismatch? Use Contact on the homepage.
